Father To Be The First Male President of National PTA

It was refreshing to see a headline on the front page of the St. Louis Post Dispatch read Breaking Barriers: Dad Rises to top of PTA(pdf), long dominated by moms. Friday, Charles “Chuck” Saylors, a 47-year-old South Carolina father, will become the first President-elect of the national PTA. I truly hope this encourages more fathers to get involved in their children’s classroom.

Last year, when my son was in Kindergarten, I volunteered to be a classroom “Mom.” The commitment involved planning the classroom parties. I was amazed, and a little hurt, when I received a call from a school employee verifying that “I knew what the volunteer position required.” She apologized for the call, but said they had never had a dad volunteer that she could remember. I was at once proud and disturbed. How could there never have been a father volunteer for his child’s Kindergarten classroom?

Kudos to Chuck. I hope he does a lot to bring awareness to the importance of a father’s involvement in the classroom.

This is a great day for dads. I’m a mom by the way, lucky enough to be a stay at home mom, and I’ve done lots of volunteering. Maybe it’s just a regional thing but over the years lots of dads have volunteered to help out at school, even the working ones who will take a day off to spend in the classroom. I don’t know the numbers but my best guess would be that the “average” single income family still involves a dad who works and a mom who stays at home which is perhaps why volunteerism is not so high with men. A lot of young men still feel, much to my surprise, that they need to be the bread winners and could never be stay at home dads. They’re raised to believe “real men” don’t stay home and raise the kids - which is sad because the dads I know who do stay home do a great job.

I see it every day more fathers are doing their 50% with their children but unfairly don’t get the respect for it. Too many stereotypes brought on by feminazi women who never had a child say they are interested in children because they want to molest them.

I have seen mothers do worse. Many men I have observed are loving dads that love and protect their children. The system is playing on stereotypes and breaking families for the money $$$ and incentives from federal gov’t using our retirement money to pay county employees and judges to make people lives miserable.

Ask a county employee if they pay into to Social Insecurity Taxes. The answer is they don’t. Fathers are more involved in their childrens lives and we should encourage them and stop this negative systems that alienate them and destroy families.
